Fencing for Foals and Young Horses

There are many types or horse fencing however certain types of fencing are much safer for foals and young horses.

The best types of fencing reduce potential hazards and should -
. Prevent foals from becoming trapped
. Keep predators out
. Not break on impact
. Have high visibility

Many types of fencing, including timber post and rail fencing, can be a hazard if a foal lies down close to the fence and gets trapped underneath when trying to stand.
Timber post and rail fencing can also cause a foal to become injured if they crash into a rail that splinters or breaks.
Fencing constructed with multiple horizontal wires may allow a foal to roll under or slip through a fence.
Beware of electric offsets. A foal can become trapped between the fence and offset resulting in electrocution.

Many horse breeding farms use mesh wire fencing with a top rail or board above for visibility.
Ensure the mesh extends very close to the ground to ensure a foal does not get a leg underneath the bottom of the fence when he lies down or rolls.
Chicken wire has a propensity to stretch and break when used for horses.

Equi Mesh or Diamond Mesh can be used for a foaling paddock; however we would strongly recommend Diamond Mesh for foals due to the smaller wire spacing and greater "give".

Standard farm fencing, for example ringlock and barbed wire, is unsuitable for horses and especially foals.
